During an initial day in office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reimagine” America's largest city, declaring “a different age” and an bold commencement to his term.

An Unprecedented Mayor

The new political star, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.

“A opportunity of this kind is rare and rarer still is it that the people themselves whose hold the levers of change,” Mamdani remarked.

Rejecting advice to temper hopes, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will govern with courage and vision.”

Governing with Socialist Ideals

Mamdani did not shy away from his political ideology. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as one. I will not abandon my ideals for concern of being called radical,” he proclaimed to loud cheers.

The swearing-in was a two-part event, beginning with a midnight oath-taking in a former subway station. He was formally sworn in on the steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's election as a victory over powerful interests.

A Sweeping Blueprint

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a plan including:

• Subsidized daycare
• No-cost bus transit
• A halt to rent increases for about 1 million households
• A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores

The projected $10 billion expense of these programs may pose a hurdle to fund. Mamdani has pledged to increase levies for the richest residents and corporations. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing Political Headwinds

The new mayor also faces concern from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past stances regarding Israel. Sensitivities were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over offensive past social media posts.

Mamdani has sought to smooth over these concerns by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “communist” and threatened withholding government money. Despite this, a recent meeting between the two was described as unexpectedly cordial.

The Core Tests of Leadership

Ultimately, New York mayors are evaluated by their success in delivering essential functions: trash collection, curbing the rat infestation, fixing potholes, and making sure smooth subway operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his administration's anti-crime efforts, pointing to historically low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.

As his work begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual piece of advice about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his remarks with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
