Patients Discontinuing Slimming Injections Put On Pounds Four Times Faster Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

New research suggests that patients who discontinue popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Research printed in a prominent health publication shows that while obese individuals often shed a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the weight returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Individuals purchasing these drugs should be aware of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain suggests a reversion to original mass within about one and a half years.

Analyzing Treatments

The analysis, which reviewed dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Scientists emphasize that individuals who lose weight through dieting typically see a slower creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

The Reason for the Rapid Rebound

Doctors suggest the mode of action of the injections explains the accelerated weight return.

The injections copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating much more probable."

A Chronic Disease?

The NHS recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians argue that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the therapy should be considered long-term.

This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "underscore the long-term character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Accounts

Individuals who have discontinued the medication explain a intense return of appetite.

"I experienced a switch flipping and I was suddenly starving," recalled one woman.

This challenge is exacerbated if patients have not established permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Significant Interest

Survey data suggest that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is higher among females compared to men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, researchers caution that while these medications are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and lasting health benefits relies on integrated behavioural management.
